What indeed, is the Spirit of Doo Dah? Well, that and a thousand other questions were answered Saturday night at the End of The World Gallery in Altadena.
Local Doo Dah luninaries like Queen Naughty Mickie, Queen Skittles and the reigning Queen Erica Valentine put forth some of their memorabilia for the general public at Ben McGinty’s Gallery at the End of the World on Lake Avenue in Altadena Saturday.
The guest list read like a Who’s Who of DashingDoo Dah Divas and their loyal followers.
The Photo contest winners are as follows: Spirit of Doo Dah:Eric Reed – Don Bodin – 2nd, Terry Miller – 3rd . The Masters Awardwent to Don Bodin; Most Regal-Brian Biery; Most Hilarious, Brian Biery Most OutrageousPaul Zolloand the People’s Choice Award was awarded to Don Bodin.
Some really cool trophies and certificates were awarded to the photographers during the Doo Dah Photography & Memorabilia Exhibit
The event included performances by The Subs, Chico’s Bail Bonds, reigning Doo Dah Queen Erica Valentine with her usual smoking stratocaster, Prince Andrew blowing his own horn, Count Smokula and Queen Nauthy Mickie did her famous swords and belly dance to the delight of the crowd. There was a silent auction with all kinds of great stuff from DIY Doo Dah kits to Esotouric tours and tiki mugs from KingKahunaPoker.com. There were photos of Doo Dahs past and Present available for auction as well as movie posters and a great Annie Leibowitz print of that I wanted but forgot to put my money where my mind was..oh well! The evening would not have been complete without an Elvis impersonator and Tom Coston ( Light Bringer CEO and all around nice bloke) whose speech inbetween music sets was one of the funniest I’ve ever heard from Mr. Coston. They were literally rolling in the aisels ( and it wasn’t all due to the fine wines and PBR- Pabst Blue Ribbon).
Proceeds from the event and auction go to the Light Bringer Project, a non-profit organization based in Pasadena. LBP’s annual Doo Dah Parade and Pasadena Chalk Festival help support its art and art education programs, including Room 13, Expressing Feelings Through Art and the Ad & Design Academy. The music was a terrific combination of classic soulful blues and originals played by some of the area’s top players. The Gallery at the End of the World is perhaps one of the most eclectic in Los Angeles County. Michelle Mills, pictured here was Doo Dah Queen two years ago and always seems to have a smile on her face. The Reason…she really enjoys life as do all who participate in Doo Dah activities year round.
Huge thanks to Gary Barbuto and Patty Hurley- two of the coolest people I know!
