Teachers Take Financial Crisis Info to the Community

Monrovia’s teachers are taking the local schools’ financial crisis directly to the community.

The teachers are hosting a Community Forum on Thursday, March 18 at Clifton Middle School beginning at 6:45 p.m. Their goal is to have as many residents there as possible to hear the facts and help find solutions.

The Monrovia Unified School District is facing a $7.5 million deficit between now and 2013, brought on solely by cutbacks in funding from the State of California. Over the next year, the teachers will report, Monrovia’s public schools will be forced to reduce the school year (school will end June 10) and increase class sizes from Kindergarten through Third Grade to 30. At least 20 teachers in the Monrovia Unified School District will loose their jobs.

Also threatened by the financial crisis is the closure of a school in the 2011-2101 school year.
