Election to be Held November 3rd

The Monrovia Unified School District has two offices on its governing board up for election this November.  The filing period for candidates for the Monrovia School Board ends August 7 at 5 p.m.

The seat of former School Board member Clarence Shaw who was elected to the Monrovia City Council in April is now open.  Chris Rich, a current member of the Board is up for reelection.

To date, only Alexandra Zucco has pulled the paperwork necessary to run for election and returned those papers.  Chris Rich has pulled the paperwork, but has not yet filed them.  Contacted by this newspaper, Rich, who is out of town on business, said that he will be filing for reelection when he returns prior to the deadline.
Rich will be filing as the incumbent, and is a local business man.  Zucco has listed her occupation as “consultant/parent.

According to the school district’s web site “To qualify to for the Board of Education a person must be able to read and write, must be a qualified voter of the district, must be a citizen of the United States, and must be eighteen (18) years of age or older.”

The Board makes the policies for the school district.  There are five members of the board who serve four year terms.  These members are elected from registered voters who live within the district.  It is important to note that the school district encompasses the city of Monrovia and some county area adjacent to the city.
After pulling the paperwork required from the County Registrar’s office, an individual is required to submit nominating papers signed by at least 25 registered voters of the district and pay the necessary fees.

Meetings of the Board are held twice a month on the first and third Wednesdays of each month.  In addition to these regular meetings, study sessions and special meetings are regularly called.  When contacted for further information about the position, Kris Mariconda, Administrative Assistant to the Superintendent of Schools, suggested that individuals interested in the School Board should contact current or former members for additional details and descriptions of the responsibilities of the members.

I think Alex Zucco and Chris Rich would be amazing on the school board. Chris has been a level-headed, diplomatic figure on the board that I have appreciated. Alex Zucco, a long time Monrovia citizen with two children in the district would be a great addition to the school board. She is a smart and involved voice in the community.

Chris has done a fabulous job and I fully support his re-election. Alex would be another intelligent, well prepared, honest and open minded voice for the School Board. She has the perspective of an involved parent in the district, as well as the career background to lead effectively and make educated decisions that benefit our kids, staff as well as the future of our district.
