The Alverno High School chapter of the National Honor Society participates in many community service projects throughout the year and most recently a very energetic group of NHS members volunteered at the Los Angeles Food Bank.
“It was a first time experience for many of us,” says NHS moderator Sandy Bogan. “And you can tell from the pictures how much fun we had.” The food bank is a huge warehouse where food is sorted and packaged for delivery to many organizations.
The Alverno group was asked to sort through huge bins of oranges and cabbage. Each piece was carefully inspected and trimmed and then packaged in large boxes in preparation for delivery. The Alvernians did an outstanding job – they worked diligently for three hours and sorted and re-packaged four huge containers of cabbage and approximately ten containers of oranges.
Several of the girls’mothers volunteered alongside their daughters which made the experience even more valuable. Ms. Bogan and NHS members agree that this should become one of the organization’s regular service projects.
Members of National Honor Society are selected by faculty not only for academic excellence but for the quality of their character. They are charged with additional service to others at their school and in their community.
Alverno, a Catholic high school for girls in Sierra Madre, is known for its academic rigor and extensive service program. Last year, Alverno students performed 17,000 hours of service to others. For more information, please visit our website at www.alverno-hs.org.
