If you or someone you know is over 55 years old and has difficulty making meals at home, you may want to consider home delivered meals from the American Red Cross Arcadia Chapter’s Meals on Wheels program.
Volunteers from the program visit neighborhoods throughout Arcadia each day to deliver a hot lunch and a cold supper at around noon, Monday through Friday. The hot lunch includes an entrée and vegetables, and the cold supper consists of a sandwich, fruit, beverage and dessert. Recipients pay a modest fee to receive meals delivered to their homes. The Arcadia Red Cross Meals on Wheels program is available to residents of the City of Arcadia who are 55 years of age and older and who are unable to prepare meals due to an illness or other debilitating condition.
Meals are prepared to be both nutritious and appetizing with controlled fat and sodium amounts, and supply two-thirds of the Recommended Dietary Allowances for the target age group. Special diet substitutions are available for people with diabetes or who need to lose weight.
The importance of proper nutrition throughout our senior years cannot be overstated. Good nutrition contributes both to our well-being and quality of life. The Meals on Wheels program is intended to help its clients eat a healthier variety of foods and to live healthier, more independent lives. A Meals on Wheels client recently wrote, “Meals on Wheels has made a big difference in my life. I would be in a nursing home without them. This service helps lessen the load for my husband, who isn’t well either.”
The Arcadia Chapter of the American Red Cross, in partnership with Methodist Hospital, began delivering meals to seniors of the City of Arcadia in 1973. The program is coordinated by Pat Hrstich, and meals are delivered by a group of dedicated volunteers. Last year, approximately 10,000 meals were served to Arcadia’s seniors.
